Summer at April Flowers

If you ask me, summer is one of the best times of year in the flower shop.

Every week feels a little different. One delivery might be filled with cheerful sunflowers, another with gorgeous dahlias or fluffy hydrangeas. Our cooler is constantly changing, which means there's always something new to fall in love with.

One of my favourite things is seeing customers walk through the door and immediately smile because they spot a flower they haven't seen in a while—or one they've been waiting all year for. That's the fun of seasonal flowers. They're only around for a short time, which makes them feel even more special.

Summer flowers have such a relaxed, garden-inspired feel. Think soft lisianthus, fragrant garden roses, colourful snapdragons, vibrant zinnias, delicate cosmos, and those big, happy sunflowers that somehow make everyone smile. Whether they're wrapped into a hand-tied bouquet or tucked into a vase arrangement, they bring so much life and colour wherever they go.

I always encourage people to buy flowers just because. They don't have to be for a birthday or anniversary. Sometimes the best reason is simply because they're beautiful, your kitchen table could use a little colour, or you want to brighten someone's day. Flowers have a funny way of making an ordinary Tuesday feel a little more special.

One thing I love about designing in the summer is that no two arrangements are exactly alike. We work with what's freshest each week, letting the flowers inspire the design. That means every bouquet is unique and made with the best blooms the season has to offer.

If you're bringing flowers home, don't forget the basics: fresh water, a clean vase, and a quick trim every few days. They'll thank you with even more beautiful blooms.
